Charles Bordeaux: Fables (Ep, Emerald & Doreen Records, 2013)

Charles Bordeaux is a producer, singer/songwriter from Long Island, living in Buffalo, NY. ‘Fables’ is a concept EP that explores the ideas of gratitude and appreciation, lyrically and sonically. The lyrics are written in story-form, starring a farmer and a personified figure of time. It all begins by ‘The Sandman’, the song forming the equivalent to the preface of a novel. The lyrics set the theme of appreciation, stating: When man was born upon this land, He was given by time a handful of sand. Time told the man to treasure each grain, For each piece of sand won’t be used again. To put it simply: you have one life. Treasure every memory/experience. After that, First Grain attempts to recreate the feelings of childhood for the listener. The following sequel is called Bloodpacts: The Weeds. The Farmer meets a man who offers him land. The Farmer takes on more than he can handle, and buys unfarmable land, wasting money & time. Oh, would he rather appreciate what he already has! Nostalgia also attempts to recreate the feelings of childhood within the listener, but with various organic samples (no restrictions via Creativ e Commons). Sounds vary from campfires to children at school, laughter, etc. Finally, The Forest & The Moon ties both The Sandman & Bloodpacts together, ending the EP… The Farmer looks back appreciating the past, and takes out his motorcycle (antique model). He rides to his favorite location in the woods and sees time under the moonlight. Here the Farmer reaches his life’s end, as he “resteps his trail” to Time. Now go and imagine all that in a fragile, splissed kind of psychelic soul music.
