Here’s a new single from mysterious Canadian, possibly Each Other-affiliated band Un Blonde. Back in March the band released a self-titled EP that I’ve listened quite extensively over the last two months and at this point I can pretty safely say that it’s my favorite EP released so far this year. With that in mind I was understandably excited that the band dropped a new track called “Lock of Hair”. If nothing else it shows that their creative juices are still flowing.
With its creepy blood red artwork borrowed from Hitchcock’s Psycho, the band is showing that their thoughts are still very much focused on the macabre. And yet that darkness is in direct contrast to the bouncing, catchy harmonies on “Lock of Hair”. With a sing-alongable melody and slightly boosted production value, the song is probably the most immediate thing that the band has released to date. With strange time signatures and tempo changes however the song is still as lovably weird as anything we heard on Un Blonde. That band is evolving ever-so-slowly but any forward movement is good news. So let’s hope that “Lock of Hair” is Un Blonde’s way of clearing their throat for their next move. Whatever that may be.
*EDIT - Dylan of Happy Trendy just alerted me to the fact that Un Blonde is actually a solo side project of Jean-Sebastian Audet of Calgary guitar pop band Faux Fur. Do you know how much of a relief that is?* (cactus-mouth.tumblr.com)
