"Taking the concept of the break-up album to a grueling extreme, Florida band Carrousel spent 2 1/2 years making its debut, “27 rue de mi’chelle.”
The album was only supposed to take four months, after singer/mastermind Joel Piedt graduated from college and turned down a job to make a record hashing through the end of a relationship with a woman named — that’s right — Michelle.
Instead, the process ballooned into an emotionally, and financially, draining project that was inspired in part by the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” and Ernest Hemingway’s “A Moveable Feast.” Now, with a release date of May 1, the dream-pop/folk group is giving away a song from the album. The tune, “14,” pairs acoustic guitar with electric piano and crashing drums, a musical arrangement through which floats Piedt’s plaintive voice.
