"The frustrating truth of so much exciting music is that well over half of it can slip through the cracks so very easily. Thankfully, some great sounds are able to be given a second life as well as the attention they so richly deserve.
It is impossible to introduce 3 1/2 without first explaining a bit about Co Wave. Focused on manufacturing records and tapes, the co-op records a wide array of genres such as lo-fi, punk, darkwave, rock, bedroom and doo wop. If this venture alone does not keep them plenty busy, they also curate events throughout the Los Angeles area and host a radio program featuring local music on KXLU 88.9.
KXLU rediscovered 3 1/2′s debut EP (originally released in 2009 and now available to downloadfor five bucks via Bandcamp), and with the help of Co Wave showing it some well-deserved love via their radio program, the band reformed and are now in the process of starting where they left off.
Los Angeles-based 3 1/2 – made-up of Leila (vocals), “Legz” (guitar), Tizza (drums) – specialize in lo-fi, off-the-wall, psychedelically experimental, rootsy indie pop that could be placed somewhere in between Pocahaunted (minus the dub … thank god) and Best Coast (with a dash of other L.A. hellcats, Hecuba, just for that prog-pop feel).
Standout track “Branches” sets the stage with its driving riffs and darkwave, lo-fi sensibilities. The mood evoked is similar to that of Warpaint, albeit with a more obvious influence steeped in punk, noise, and grunge. There’s something in “Green Leaf’ with the refrain “It’s warm in California/I’m gonna mourn ‘ya” that brings to mind L7‘s breakthrough hit, “Pretend That We’re Dead” mixed with a bit of the darkwave bittersweetness from the likes of Frankie Rose.
In March, Co Wave, along with all-ages community art and music space The Smell, are sending 3 1/2 to South By Southwest where they will showcase along with other local Los Angeles-based bands, including Ty Segall" (listenbeforeyoubuy.net)
