Francis: Traktor (Single, 2012)

"We first featured Francis here almost two years ago, but never gave them a proper introduction. Now, that time has come.
Francis is a four-piece band from Sweden featuring three dudes (Petter Nygårdh on drums, Jerker Henriksson on guitar and Tim Grundtman on bass) and a dudette (Petra Mases on vocals and piano) that have been together since 2006. Despite having been together for almost six years now, they’re not exactly prolific.
In fact, the band has only put out a single (“Bad To The Bone” in 2008), an EP (“Francis EP”in 2009) and a full-length (“Lekomberg, We Were Kin” in 2011). The band’s sound on all those releases is relatively folk-y sounding, with clear influences in blues and Americana, so much so, in fact, that it’s hard to believe they’re not actually American, like
Mumford and Sonsall over again. If you don’t believe me, check out tracks like “Colossus” or “Ten Thousand Times” from their debut.
Now the band is returning with a new EP, “This Must Be Blood” due out February 27th onStrangers Candy/Playground, and a more decidedly pop sound. The title track from the EP,“Traktor” is the first taste the band have given, and, while maintaining Francis’ style, it makes huge leaps toward sounding much more up to date. The guitar riff is a great hook and is the track’s main selling point, but not the only one; the vocals have also improved, adding a lot more range to the band’s sound. Overall, it’s a very catchy, captivating track that’s bound to be stuck in your head for days.
Nothing on the EP comes quite as close to greatness as the lead single, but “Creek Of Lonesome Town” comes close. For now, you’re going to have to take my word on it since “This Must Be Blood” still has about a month before it sees the light of day, but the bass-driven track offers a much darker mood and another killer guitar hook that opens up the EP wonderfully.
The rest of “This Must Be Blood” offers a great taste of new directions for the band, with hints to their previous material, as well as some Latin-influences guitar licks that demonstrate the versatility of a band that have years of experience behind them and a promising future ahead" (Listened:
