Sunburns: Youth (Ep, 2011)

"Okay, first go to the bottom of this post and hit play on any of the three songs from Sunburns‘ “Youth EP”. Are you listening? Can I tell you that these guys are just seventeen and eighteen years old? Going to high school in Cologne, Germany by day, earlier this year Sunburns recorded their first “Youth EP”. The result is short, sweet three song sampler of what I hope is more to come.
Synths give it a fun pop feel, while maintaining a folky heart and there are many moments in Sunburns’s songs that have a feeling of climactic anthems paired with their perfect 80s counterparts (“Tenderness” by General Public? “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds?) But it’s more of a Sarah Records twee sound, not the stuff from the awesomely-unfortunate As Seen On TV one hit wonder compilations. When the synths kick in on the song “Youth” I think of The Wake (“
Crush The Flowers“), less cutesy and more sweet.
This band is John Cusack standing outside your bedroom with a boombox in Say Anything rather than rich boy Andrew McCarthy making out with your broke ass in the parking lot in Pretty In Pink (okay, I liked that one, too). Though they have an inherently eighties sound, it isn’t predisposed to nostalgia like so much music is that borrows from past decades. Sunburns doesn’t really borrow any of the niche qualities associated with the past, it’s just in them.
Sunburns is David Müller on vocals and piano, guitarists Timo Wiesner and Marc Thoma, Johannes Friedrich on trumpet and drummer Jannis Kordt. It’s hard to believe that Müller is still in high school when listening to his unique voice that seems to hold a husk and passion that could only develop through the passing of time. Having said all the eighties stuff above, Müller thinks that every one in the band “is influenced subliminally by every band he or she likes,” which is particularly true here. I really can’t pinpoint to any specific bands of influence if I tried. The “Youth EP” was recorded in a home studio built by Müller’s dad and here I think the band’s favorite sounds could safely, magically play together.
Earnest, fun and unique, I hope Sunburns continue making music well-past this early stage in their lives. Listen to the “Youth EP” in full below or download it from their
Bandcamp, where you can also find an extra track" (Heard: listenbeforeyoubuy.net)
