"Belle Adair have this Americana thing going on that I haven’t been able to quite figure out. They are equal parts a folk rock band playing a saloon, but also have this playfulness inside as if they were part of the indie psych-pop Elephant 6 Collective, especially circa the ’90s. Is that Jeff Tweedy singing “honey” on “No Reply”? Is that the Olivia Tremor Control spinning out of the realms of pop structure on “Paris Is Free”?
It’s not, but it is part of a pretty eclectic repertoire from the group based in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Before releasing their debut eponymous EP this past January, the group was pretty disjointed, creating sporadic recordings from different parts of the state before coming together. As the group stands today with Matt Green, Ben Tanner, Daniel Stoddard, Chris James, Patrick McDonald, Matt Myrick and Grey Watson, it seems to be a good fit.
Belle Adair have the standard formula for a band of the guitar/s, drums and keys and then they seamlessly shift into a more experimental sound or at least an unexpected one for what preceded it. On “Happy To Pretend” the instrumentation and vocals seem to be under water until the harmonica breaks it up and they come out for air. It’s a great contrast and the swooning instrumentation eventually becomes a slow build up of crunching experimental guitar sounds. There is a woodiness to the overall sound, particularly the vocals. Don’t let the mid-tempo throw you off, though, because Belle Adair create quite a sophisticated sound, an intricate lattice of subtlety.
They’re equal parts Alex Chilton and The Apples In Stereo. Yet underneath all the layers of folk, rock or pop, there is an underlying and undeniable American sound. I didn’t know this was even possible, but here’s the proof.
They will be releasing a split 7″ with The Bear this winter and will begin preparing to record their first full length release soon. Listen to my favorite tracks below and watch some performance videos of “Written on the Wind” and “Sister” from the “Live From The Shoals” series, too – it’s always fun to watch the delicacies of a band like this come to fruition by watching the band actually play" (Find: listenbeforeyoubuy.net)
