"What starts off with a slow building intro develops into an intense angsty wall of simplistic perfection reminiscent of all that was right in the early 90′s. Through all the noise and heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics nothing feels overdone or forced, it’s unpretentious emotion released with clarity and focus. To say this song reminds me of The Pixies would be a massive understatement.
Cloud Nothings announced yesterday that the new album “Attack On Memory” will be released on January 24. Before hearing “No Future/No Past” I had been wondering what direction Dylan Baldi would be going for. I had this notion he was going to chill things out a bit and come across a little more singer/songwriterish since he has hinted in the past about straying away from the lo-fi aspect that seemed to be the backbone of his work.
Sure the new song doesn’t have that lo-fi sound but it’s far from a change in direction and I couldn’t be happier. Some bands lose so much of their magnetism when the cloud of fuzz and vintage tape clears out and it becomes apparent that the band was merely using it as a smoke screen to hide their lack of ability and mediocre songs. From this new track it looks like the lo-fi may have been more of an Achilles heal when it came to showcasing all that Baldi is capable of.
I think with the deserved yet unexpected success of bands like Yuck and 1,2,3 it’s giving confidence to other bands to bring their music more into focus rather than the genre they fit into. Basically, Cloud Nothings “No Future/No Past” is an early taste of what I’m expecting to see as the next major shift in the indie sound" (Lost: listenbeforeyoubuy.net)
