"Since it’s Megafaun I’m willing to just skip over how much this song sounds like Neil Young’s “Cortez The Killer.”
Former/occasional Justin Vernon bandmates continue pushing their sound forward and making enjoyable music. Their self-titled album will be out in three weeks and I find myself wondering how much the rest of the tracks on it will reflect this obvious shedding-of-their-roots past. I’ve always embraced the bluegrass-tinged passive folk sound that we’ve come to know as “Megafaun” so on a personal level it’s taking me some effort to get excited for this shift. I’m not saying there aren’t hints of that past in “State/Meant” it’s just much more subtle than I would have hoped for.
I also can’t help but notice how much that shift seems to be happening overall in indie music right now. It’s as if that early seventies to late seventies transition is taking place all over again. Sure there are people who will get excited from knowing that in three years there will be long wailing electric guitar solos and a complete shift of focus from message to feeling but don’t count me as one of them. I’ve been very happy with the status of music over the last few years, yet change is always going to happen so I’m not fighting it.
If you need other examples of where I’m coming from give attention to the differences between Bon Iver‘s and Blitzen Trapper’s current sound from where they were on their previous albums. No matter what the overall sound, Megafaun are a far too talented band to put out anything that isn’t entirely fantastic. Whichever direction they go in will be worth following. Make sure to pick the new album up on September 20th" (Via: listenbeforeyoubuy.net)
