"At some point I was arm-twisted into watching “Clueless”. I deny all allegations that I secretly quite enjoyed it. It did have two saving graces: first, Donald Faison; second, a surprisingly good soundtrack. One track featured on it was “My Forgotten Favorite” by Velocity Girl. The point of this story, insofar as any of my stories have an actual point, is that the start of that track sounds kind of like the first seven seconds or so of Cheerleader‘s “New Daze”. The rest is literally – and I’m literally using “literally” literally – literally in no way similar, but hey: the more you know.
Cheerleader comprises the rather impressively named Donovan Rex and Max Friday. They met in highschool in Hartford, CT, and have worked together on a bunch of musical ventures since 2002. Having always stuck with the old “garage plus instruments plus a couple of guys to play them” formula in the past, they decided to head off in a different direction with Cheerleader and try their hand at electronica.
The result is something like a lo-fi Cut Copy – “New Daze” is a pretty good approximation of “Going Nowhere” if it had been recorded on a crappy 8-track. They haven’t lost touch with their rock roots, mind you. “Dreamer” is a lighter reimagining of The Jesus And Mary Chain that replaces the Scottish gloom (so the weather sucks: do you have a problem with that?) with summer-friendly hooks and a swishier top end.
The boys take their inspiration from a pretty extensive and diverse range of artists – think Pixies to Otis Reading; The Beach Boys to Madvillain and you begin to get the picture. Apparently, when you distil those together, you end up with a brand of indie pop that would be blissed out if it wasn’t so upbeat. There’s a definite touch of Washed Out, although everything snaps along at a brisk pace rather than basking in the ambience.
There’s no word yet on an album, or even an EP, but with summer in full swing now is definitely the right moment for Cheerleader. My guess is expect more soon" (vía:listenbeforeyoubuy.net)
