An overindulgent guitar solo? Five minutes of a chorus repeat? "When a band claims to be a sort of party band, I am always very hesitant to actually believe them. A band can claim they play big house shows with crowd surfing and mayhem but nine times out of ten, I don’t buy it. However, I do with Best Friends. Throwing Up sounds like an album that I would indeed put on at a house party, it’s catchy and poppy without ever getting kitschy. I’m moving into a new apartment next month, I wonder how much it would be to fly the band from England to New York. "I've watched Best Friends three times this year and I can guarantee myself that number will have doubled by New Year. I'm starting to become an overly protective fan – they don't know this, yet I'm worried that they will. Now they're back with a split tape with buddies/housemates/bros Grazes, and again, releasing on the ever reliable Art Is Hard label. 'Dude Love' begins as a scuzzy and drenched jam, before transforming into an clattering pop gem. Each instrument enters the fold at its own accord and though the lyrics are repetitive and sparse, they emphasise the yearning desire of a summer solitude. 'Mankind' is a benign tribute to Mick Foley, with a refusal to go elsewhere, which builds into a crescendo of cymbals and a powerfully bright riff. There is a great disparity between people writing about Best Friends' sound and their lyrics. Entertaining and fun, yes they are – however, I have been of the opinion that the themes of their writing are overlooked, when they shouldn't be. There is nothing lackadaisical about their 'slacker image'; these a tightly written songs about yearning, acceptance and love. Hopefully with this release more people will realise so, arguably because these songs demonstrate them best. Of course they are separate issues, but only one of which is being covered. "How did I not find this earlier? Big thanks to my pal Rachel Levy for unknowingly turning me on to this because it just made my day.
Ok so there is this band from Sheffield, England and they are called Best Friends. Oh and their debut EP is called Surf Bitches and the cover features a tie-dye-wearin’ golden retriever. If someone told me that the band was in this for anything other than the fun of it I would flat out call them a liar. I mean come on, it’s a golden retriever!
Now the music itself is (again) some spunky, noisy surf rock. Sorry for the barrage of it lately but like I said I’m on vacation.
