WESTKUST somehow manages to balance a recklessness and pop sensibility with their song construction. On one level “Weekends” feels like it could fall apart at any moment, but it’s held together by the scotch tape of a buried guitar line that’s equal parts blasé and catchy. There’s a unifying force in Frida’s vocals, which are most pronounced on the demo’s most accessible track, “Falling Through the Floor”, a song that Pains of Being Pure at Heart might’ve wish they came up with first. “Queen” serves as the band’s most aggressive number, and there’s a slight Dum Dum Girls subversive sultriness to “Trip/Saturday” that adds another layer to WESTKUST’s influences.
